How to Clean a Silicone Water Bottle (No Odours, No Residue)
Silicone water bottles are one of the best eco-friendly hydration choices available — BPA-free, durable, and completely plastic-free. But like any reusable bottle, they need regular cleaning to stay fresh and odour-free. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Silicone Bottles Can Develop Odours
Silicone is a non-porous material, which means it doesn't absorb liquids or bacteria the way plastic does. However, if not cleaned regularly, residue from drinks — particularly coffee, tea, and fruit juices — can build up and cause odours. The good news is that silicone is very easy to clean thoroughly.
Daily Cleaning: The Basics
After each use, rinse your silicone bottle with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Use a bottle brush to scrub the inside thoroughly, paying particular attention to the bottom and any ridges. Rinse well and leave to air dry upside down on a drying rack.
Deep Cleaning: For Stubborn Odours
For a deeper clean, fill your bottle with a solution of 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 cup of warm water. Leave to soak for 30 minutes, then scrub and rinse thoroughly. Alternatively, a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water works equally well. Both methods are completely natural and chemical-free.
Dishwasher Cleaning
Most silicone water bottles are dishwasher safe — check the manufacturer's instructions to confirm. Place on the top rack and use a normal wash cycle. The high temperature will kill any bacteria and remove any residue.
A clean bottle is a bottle you'll actually use. And a bottle you use is one less plastic bottle in the ocean. Take care of your reusables, and they'll take care of you — and the planet. 💧
